McDowell Mountain Regional Park offers a tranquil and well-equipped RV camping experience just Northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. With its spacious sites, modern amenities, and proximity to outdoor adventures, it is one of my favorite places to camp. My dog also likes camping at McDowell.
Campground Overview
The campground features 76 developed sites, each accommodating RVs up to 45 feet in length. Most sites are back-in, but there are a few pull-through sites. Sites are equipped with water and electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and barbecue grills. Modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers are available, ensuring a comfortable stay. A dump station is also on-site for added convenience. The dump site can be busy during checkout time, so plan ahead.
Scenic Beauty & Wildlife
Situated at the base of the McDowell Mountains, the park spans over 21,000 acres, offering breathtaking views and a diverse array of desert landscapes. Campers can enjoy sightings of local wildlife, including coyotes, javelinas, and a variety of bird species. The serene environment is ideal for stargazing, with minimal light pollution that enhances the night sky experience.
Outdoor Activities
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore, with over 50 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The park is renowned for its mountain biking trails, attracting riders from across the country. Additionally, the nearby McDowell Sonoran Preserve offers more challenging terrains for those seeking a more strenuous adventure.
Pet-Friendly Environment
McDowell Mountain Regional Park is pet-friendly, allowing leashed pets to accompany their owners on trails and in campsites. This makes it an excellent destination for travelers wishing to include their furry companions in their outdoor adventures.
Reservations
Given the park’s popularity, especially during peak seasons, it’s advisable to make reservations well in advance. Reservations can be made through the Maricopa County Parks & Recreation website. I can sometimes get late reservations because people always cancel. I keep checking the reservation website.
